The return of the Micro cinema

After the sell out success of our Belfast Film Festival programme, including the Night of the Living Dead All-nighter, we’re bringing our micro-cinema back for some particularly trans type movies. Each feature will come with a full supporting programme.

Daytime programme – Electronic Music
2pm – Theremin

A documentary Leon Theremin, inventor of electronic musical instrument the theremin, who amazed with his instrument until his kidnapping by Soviet agents in the mid-30s.

...is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit , its birthplace.

presents a Brooklyn neighborhood with its very own once-in-a-lifetime free block party, but with Michel Gondry behind the camera that’s only half the story.

Evening Programme – Extreme Animation

8pm – Mind Game

This journey of self-discovery based on 's cult underground comic "Mind Game" by Robin Nishi is a mind-bending trip that uses some of the most innovative animation ever created.

10pm – Coonskin

Animator Ralph Bakshi conjures up a violent universe populated by hustlers and punks, sad-eyed prostitutes and sullen gangsters. One of the most controversial films ever made, Coonskin is an angry, violent portrayal of Harlem street life and the black condition of the 1970s.

12.00 – Surprise Movie

You’ll not be disappointed

You Blog, I Blog, We all Blog...

So you do an exhibition about Photo Blogging and, while the resulting exhibtion and the work on show in it is of a standard of which I am delighted, one of the best things about doing it is you should get a blog from each contributor.

No point in me saying much when its covered by...

Red Mum
Alan in Belfast
Goodonpaper
Iced Coffee
Moochin Photoman

...for starters

Here's some photos of the Fighting with Wire + General Fiasco gig...

By UAA Student Nico

and a micro review from Journalism students Nic and Laura...

'Last night had us at Stiff Kitten, for the Fighting With Wire gig. The music was loud, the crowd drunk and louder, and all in all a great night. Support from the trumpet-welding Skruff and fresh-faced General Fiasco was well suited for the evening and the mosh pit, er, venue was so packed that getting to the bar was a daring feat. Check out U-Mag for a full review, including the sexual trumpeting'

As I type the Burlesque night is banging away in the next room, there will be loads of photos cause there's about 5 photography students here and the Gig Promotion Students set up a photobooth.

Snap, Crackle, Rock.

Pennie Smith, the photographer responsible for greatest rock ‘n’ roll photograph of all-time(London Calling album cover), today formed part of a panel discussion on whether traditional film photography is on its way out after the digital revolution or whether the digital age has merely made the art more democratic. This coincides with the launch of the Add to Set exhibition which profiles some of the Belfast based photo blogs.
The Add to Set exhibition can be found at the Waterfront gallery and is well worth a visit.

Elsewhere at the Waterfront, the students of the Urban Arts Academy have been getting to work. Journalism student, Laura Robinson, had this to say about the Los Campesinos gig on Monday.

“With the first event on the Trans festival bill done and dusted it looks like Los Campesinos! were the perfect choice to headline the excellent local talent that were lined up to play - they provided a stellar performance.
The audience barely had time to hear the lead singer Gareth's 'Hello Belfast' before the guitars were slammed into action and with the help of Gareth's shouty verses and the other instruments a wailing wall of noise was made.
The energy on stage was clear to see. From the professional amateur dramatics (everything from leaping off other peoples instruments to taking your top off and diving into the audience while still singing) to the extraordinary amount of toe tappable and hand clappable chorus' that they have managed to craft even the oldies at the back managed to loosen up and bop their head to the beat.”

The radio production students were treated to and audience with your favourite uncle, and mine, Hugo Duncan. Oh, and eh... Rigsy (for whom we are eternally grateful)

Legend.

SIX WORD SUM UP: Photography is democratic, Hugo is God.

Trans is go!

Trans 2008 has landed. UAA has opened for business. Prepare for some more awesomeness in your lovely life.

Los Campesinos headlined the opening gig in outstanding fashion with help from local bands Kowalski, Two Door Cinema Club and the wonderful Cat Malojian. Los Campesinos rocked the Waterfront Hall studio with their usual array of cowbells, keyboards and uber quirky vocals. This bans is as much fun live as they seem on record and their brash playfulness is refreshing to say the least.

Elsewhere at camp Waterfront, the Urban Arts Academy has enrolled this year’s lucky students. Here’s is a lovely picture of radio production student during a tour of the UTV studios.

Wasn’t that lovely?

If you find yourself in Belfast with time on your hands you would be well advised to call into the Waterfront Hall where you will find the Trans lounge.

I’m off to prepare for Fighting With Wire and General Fiasco at the Stiff Kitten tomorrow night. Be there, not square.

SIX WORD SUM UP: Campesinos rock, UTV has shiny studios.
Over and out.
